The Impact of Zhong Kui is Ghost-Taming on Posterity

The tales about Zhong Kui's taming and devour- ing ghosts became current in the Tang Dynasty, when Emperor Xuanzong ordered the pictures of Zhong Kui hung at the end of a year. By Dezong's reign in the mid-Tang period, the emperor made it a point to bestow calendars with pictures of Zhong Kui on the courtiers on New Year's Eve. During the Song Dynasty, the common people hung pictures of Zhong Kui on the Double Fifth Day and New Year's Eve as a shield against evil spirits. The enshrining of Zhong Kui as a deity is not only because he was praised by the feudal rulers, but also because of his wide representation in literary works and the graph- ic arts. The most popular in this regard are the Ming Dynasty's Stories of Taming Ghosts by Yanxia Sanren, Records of the Taming of Ghosts by Taoist priest Yun Zhong, and Story of Zlwng Kui Marrying Off His Younger Sister, Qing Dynasty's paintings Portrait of Zhong Kui by famous painter Dong Shen,Drunken Zhong Kui by Luo Pin, and Zhong Kui Marries Off His Younger Sister by Hua Yan; and the modern Chinese painting Drinking Zhong Kui by master painter Xu Beihong.
